What?
I am going to take staged/tableau photographs of women that I know. The aim of the project is to explore Eugene culture - it's whiteness and manicured houses side, as well as its transient, edgy side - using the models as a medium through which to portray this. The scenarios will be constructed but the shots should be candid and revealing. I hope to achieve a certain amount of mystery and intrigue in the photographs. I want to use color as a means in which to express these ideas.
Why?
This term I have experimented with taking more spontaneous photographs. Although some of the photos are "good", I don't feel the majority have a permeating message. Because there is not a hubbub of action to document in Eugene, this spontaneity has been less about the decisive moment and more about close observation. However, I personally find that my artistic subconscious comes out more clearly and interestingly when I stage a scene for the photos.
This project is relevant to the class because we are studying modern, and digital approaches to the photographic practice. I am interested in making this very accessible medium convey something compelling or evocative. I also want to be very conscious of my color palette, which is another subject we have studied in depth.
How?
I am going to ask friends to model for me in unique locations in and around Eugene. I also want to use a tripod and experiment with panorama photos as well as the stitching tool on Photoshop.
Major Influences?
This Looking through the Cotton book I find myself most drawn towards the tableau photographs of Gregory Crewdson and Jeff Wall. I also am inspired by the work of Tina Barney, Cindy Sherman and Izima Kaoru.
Personal Accomplishment?
I have been exploring the topic of "Identity" through my photography for a few years. It has been a means of expression and understanding of self. I am most drawn towards photoshoot photography, so I think I should tap into and develop what I am compelled by. However, I have always used black and white photos, so this will be my first endeavor with color and digital photography in this project. Therefore, I am interested in successfully using color as a means to express sentiment. I am also looking forward to using photoshop.
